Nothing surpasses the joy that a newborn brings into a home. Newborns are beautiful and always make for great portrait pictures. In fact, their photos, if well captured, can greatly beautify your portfolio as a photographer.
I have created this article to provide you with all the knowledge and tips you need to click exquisite newborn photos, even if you have never captured one.
You might have heard the word “newborn photography” many times, even before you opened this article. It is a popular type of portrait photography. It involves taking beautiful pictures of infants within the first two weeks of their life. It is a delicate form of photography.
It is the only form of photography where the subject’s safety will be the photographer’s top priority. A newborn photographer’s goal is to capture the beauty and innocence of an infant creatively and artistically while ensuring the child’s utmost comfort.
Why Is Newborn Photography Important?
Capturing the earliest moments of a child’s life is a great deal. The first few years of a newborn’s life are characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Recording these moments as pictures will allow parents and even caregivers to track the child’s growth.
Additionally, newborn photography helps parents and family members preserve these special memories and share them with the child as they grow older. The photos can also serve as family heirlooms.
As a photographer, I always consider it a great honor when I’m given the opportunity to capture the early moments of a child’s life and the unhidden expression of the parents.
Preparing for a Newborn Photography Session
Photographing newborns either in the studio or at home is a challenging task. Therefore, you will have to plan and prepare yourself thoroughly.
Newborns know nothing about photography or looking fine in photos. So, you will be responsible for everything. Although the parents or caregivers will be around to help you, the task is 99.9% yours.
Unlike adults, newborns can’t move or pose themselves. But if wrongly positioned, they can roll and fall. I’m sure you don’t want such an incident to occur. So, you have to prepare beforehand.
Choosing the right camera for newborn photography
Generally, DSLR cameras are best for newborn photography. They have high-resolution sensors, which will allow you to capture fine details.
Additionally, they can shoot RAW and support lens changing, giving you room to create unique photos.
However, DSLRs are loud and can disturb the newborn. Mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, are silent and more user-friendly.
Both types of cameras are great for this type of photography. You will just have to be creative. If you are still confused about the right camera for the job, I recommend any with the following features or abilities.
- A camera that will allow you to shoot in manual mode.
- A camera with a high-resolution sensor. This will help capture fine details in your photos.
- Consider a camera with a flip-out screen. It will make it easier for you to see your composition when shooting from different angles.
- Choose a camera with a long-lasting battery. Capturing a newborn usually takes time.
You may click the link below to read our reviews on various types of mirrorless and DSLR cameras and find out which of them are best and less expensive.
Choosing the right lens for newborn photography
A 50mm lens is one of the best lenses for newborn photography. It is versatile and you can use it for a variety of shots, including close-ups and full-body portraits.
You may go through the articles below to learn more about a 50mm lens.

You can also employ a macro lens for the task. With it, you can capture fine details, such as the baby’s fingers and toes. Ultimately, I suggest you choose a lens with a wide aperture (f/1.4 or f/1.8).
This will allow you to create a shallow depth of field and blur the background (if necessary). It will also let you create a soft, dreamy effect in your photos.
7 Best newborn props and Accessories
To take exceptional newborn photos, you need extraordinary props and accessories. Here are 6 (six) props you can begin with.
1. Wraps and swaddles
These are some of my favorite materials for newborn photography. They are soft and cozy, and I often use them to keep the baby comfortable and secure. Conversely, they can add texture and color to the photos.
2. Headbands and hats
Cute headbands and hats are found in almost every newborn photographer bag or studio. These materials are used to add personality to the pictures and also to keep the baby’s head warm and protected.
3. Faux fur rugs and blankets
You can also use faux fur rugs or blankets to create a soft and cozy backdrop for the baby to lie on.
4. Baskets and bowls
Small baskets and bowls are great and popular props for newborn photography. I usually use them to pose newborns in a variety of positions, such as in a curled-up manner.
5. Wooden crates/boxes
Additionally, you can use a wooden crate to create a rustic or vintage look in newborn photography while also providing a sturdy and safe surface for the baby to lie on.
6. Baby-sized cabins, chairs and sofas
Similarly, you can employ small chairs and sofas specially designed for babies to pose the newborn in a seated position.
7. Family heirlooms
You can also incorporate or use family heirlooms or any sentimental items in the pictures. It can be a necklace, wrist or leg chain, or even a book.
Aside from these, you can use other props like mini cars, airplanes, miniature beds, flowers, and even miniature beds. Furthermore, you may include balloons, old books, eyeglasses, and stuffed animals, in your newborn props collection.
Newborn Photography Tips You Can Rely On
Here are several tips you can rely on.
5 Tips for Setting up the Room/studio for newborn photoshoots
Setting up your studio environment or your client’s home in readiness for a newborn photo shoot is another important step you must consider.
The appearance of your studio or how you approach working in your client’s homes plays a big role in the success of your sessions and relationships with the family involved. Here are a few tips to help you:
1. Keep the studio or room well-regulated
Newborns are very sensitive to temperature. So, make sure your studio or the room (to be used) for the session is warm enough to keep the baby comfortable.
2. Take advantage of soft, natural light
Do not use harsh, direct light or flash, as this can be too bright and overwhelming for the baby. Instead, use diffused natural light, such as light coming in through the window, or use a softbox, to create a gentle and flattering light source.
3. Use simple backdrops
Additionally, ensure you use simple and neutral backdrops that will not distract from the baby, such as a solid-colored blanket or fabric.
You may also use textured backdrops, such as fur or wool, to add dimension and interest to the photo. And do not use any props that might pose a threat to the newborn’s comfort.
4. Create a calming environment with soft music or white noise
You can download white noise or soft music from the internet to help you create a gentle, constant sound that will make the baby feel relaxed and calm.
5. Take your time to create a baby-friendly set
Take your time and ensure that every piece of equipment, such as lights, stands, and tripods, is well positioned. Additionally, ensure the location is big enough to also accommodate the parents.
5 tips for selecting newborn props and accessories
Choosing newborn photography props and accessories can be fun. Here are five tips to help select the right ones for the photo session:
1. Keep it simple
- Avoid colorful props and accessories that will distract or draw attention from your subject, which is the baby in this case.
- Use simple and timeless props, such as blankets, baskets, and wraps.
- Do not use too many props or accessories in one shot. If you must use several props, then take different shots with distinct poses and clothes.
2. Consider using props that will reveal the baby’s birth story
Every newborn has a story. Some are delivered naturally, while others are delivered through surgery (C-section). A few others might be rainbow babies.
Thus, ask the parents if they have any special items or accessories they might want to include in the photos and incorporate them into the shoot. If the parents have none, then you may creatively use your available props to reveal the baby’s birth story.
However, ensure the color rhymes with the story. For instance, if you are capturing a rainbow baby, ensure you use rainbow props or objects that have the shape or colors of the rainbow.
3. Consider the season
Whether or not there is a story to tell about the baby’s birth, you should select props and accessories that will reveal the season or holiday the newborn was delivered.
For example, if the photo shoot is during the Christmas season, that means the baby was born during the season. So you should consider using a small Santa hat or any related prop.
4. Think about the colors
Generally, soft, muted colors such as pastels or neutral tones are the best for newborn photography. However, you should consider the newborn’s skin tone when selecting props to use. Only select props and accessories that will complement the skin color and the overall theme of the photos.
5. Always use soft, comfortable materials
Do not use materials that might make the child feel uncomfortable or scratchy. I recommend you utilize only cotton or wool materials for newborn photography.
10 Unique posing tips for newborn photography
Posing newborns can be fun yet challenging. I have provided some professional tips below to help you:
1. The baby’s safety should be your top priority
If you have held a newborn, you will understand how soft and delicate they are. Thus, the safety of the baby must be your top priority when posing it for photos.
In fact, always have an assistant to help you during the shoot, and never leave the baby unattended on high surfaces.
2. Keep the baby’s head supported
You can use a pillow or beanbag to support the baby’s head and keep the newborn comfortable and stable.
3. Start with the baby’s natural poses
Newborn babies have natural poses, such as curling up into a ball. Each baby is different. So, take your time to find what position the baby is best accustomed to and start from there.
4. Keep everything simple
Sometimes, the best newborn photos are the simplest ones. Although posing or moving the baby’s hands and legs into unique positions will make for great photos, capturing them sleeping or in a natural position can reveal even more.
5. One step at a time
Be gentle when changing the baby’s position or adjusting some body parts, such as the legs and hands. Do not try to adjust every part at once.
6. Wrap the baby in a soft, stretchy fabric
Look for soft and stretchy fabric, such as a jersey knit or muslin, which will allow the baby to move its legs and hands when wrapped.
7. Pose the newborn on a steady surface
I do not recommend posing the newborn on a high surface. But regardless of where you want to pose the baby, ensure it is stable, soft, and cozy.
8. Always start with the baby’s head
When changing the baby’s pose, gently cradle it in your hand and begin by moving its head. Avoid putting any pressure on the neck or spine, and ensure the head is being supported by one of your hands or a soft object.
Once the baby’s head is supported, you can gently move their arms and legs into different positions. Be careful not to stretch or bend them too far. You can use props and warm blankets to support the baby’s body and keep it in a comfortable position.
9. Position the baby away from the light source
Additionally, do not position the baby close to your softboxes or light diffusers. Light reflections from these sources can make them feel uncomfortable.
10. Practice beforehand
Finally, do not wait until you are called to photograph a newborn before you start practicing how to pose a baby for photos. Keep learning, even during the off-season.
9 Tips for working with parents and siblings
Working with parents and siblings can sometimes be challenging. Some can be overprotective, while others are quite welcoming and will allow you to do your job.
Here are some of the ways I have been able to work with several parents successfully:
- Practice active listening and learn to communicate clearly.
- Be respectful.
- Act professionally and set boundaries.
- Find common ground and work together as a big team.
- Practice empathy.
- It’s their baby, not yours.
- The parents have the final say about the pose and style.
- Do not explore the space allocated in their homes for the photo session. Maintain the area, do your job, and move out.
- Dress smart, but appear soft.
Creative Ideas For Newborn Photography
Below are some of the best ways you can begin posing newborns for photographs.
7 Simple Ways to Wrap a Newborn for Photography
Several newborn photographers often find it difficult to wrap babies for newborn photography. Here are 7 simple ways you can wrap a baby even if you have never wrapped one:
1. Get the baby properly dressed
Some people like to wrap babies without clothing, but I prefer having them dressed first. If the weather is warm, dress the newborn in a simple singlet and nappy underneath the wrap.
And if the weather is cold, you can get the baby dressed up in a lightweight jumpsuit underneath the wrap.
2. Choose a soft, lightweight fabric or wrap
Look for a lightweight fabric that will allow the baby to stretch when wrapped. Then evenly spread the fabric or material on a flat surface.
3. Place the baby in the center of the fabric
Next, gently place the baby in the center of the fabric, with its head just above the top edge.
4. Fold the top corner over
Furthermore, take the top corner of the fabric, and fold it over the baby’s chest, tucking it under the opposite arm.
5. Fold the bottom corner up
Then, take the bottom corner of the fabric and fold it up over the baby’s feet, tucking it under its chin.
6. Secure with a knot
Take the two remaining corners of the fabric and tie them together in a knot, just above the baby’s feet.
7. Make necessary adjustments
Once you have successfully wrapped the baby, gently adjust the fabric to ensure it is comfortable and secure.
You can also add additional layers or accessories, such as a headband or bonnet, to add interest and personality to the images.

Best Camera And Lighting Settings for Newborn Photography
Here are my recommended camera and lighting settings for stunning newborn photos:
Recommended camera setting
- Use a fast aperture (around f/4) to create a shallow depth of field and blur the background, thereby creating high-quality professional photos. For family or newborn with sibling photos, increase your aperture to around f/8 or f/11. This will help get everyone in focus.
- Use a shutter speed of at least 1/125s to freeze the baby’s movement and reduce motion blur.
- Set your ISO lower (between 100-400) to reduce noise in the images.
- Shoot in RAW image format.
Recommended lighting setting
When capturing newborn photos, try to utilize natural light if possible. If you must use artificial light, then use a softbox or umbrella to diffuse the light and create a soft, even light

Nevertheless, here is how to edit their photos:
1. Start with the basics
After extracting the images to your editing software, adjust the exposure, white balance, and contrast to get a good foundation for the photographs.
2. Remove blemishes and apply portraiture
Use the clone stamp or healing brush tool to remove any blemishes or spots, and apply portraiture or any skin smoothing filter to fine-tune the picture.
3. Enhance the details
Use the sharpening tool to make the baby’s details, such as hair, fingers, or clothing, pop.
4. Crop and straighten the image
Use the crop tool to cut the photo and straighten any crooked lines or angles.
5. Add finishing touches and save the image
Finally, add any finishing touches to the shot and save it.
