How Can You Photograph Stars At Night? Step by step process
Pick a suitcase location
When it has to do with capturing the stars at night, you will need more than a good location. For picture clarity, you must avoid light pollution-that means staying away from areas with excessive light and going out to scenes with low light. As a beginner, your location should be on higher ground if you want clear and quality images.
Observe the weather
Yes, you have to ensure that the weather is almost perfect, the clouds are clear, and the stars are visible before going to the field. Give attention to the moonlight because stars are less visible when the moon is full.
Set up your tripod
A tripod is compulsory for night sky photography. It allows a faster shutter of up to several seconds while maintaining your position. Without a tripod, your images will appear blurred or noisy.
Get your camera settings right
Your camera settings decide how your photographs would appear.
To get epic images of the stars at night, make sure you set up your camera correctly. Wrong camera settings would produce awful images of the stars.
Shoot
You chose the perfect night, a low light location, and set your tripod and camera ISO, exposure, and focus, and now is the time to capture the stars.
To prevent having camera shakes when you click the shutter release, use a remote control or turn on the self-timer; so your hands are not holding onto the camera when the exposure starts.
Check and adjust your star photographs
Capturing the stars at night requires consistent practice and patience. Take a look at the images that you’ve taken – are you satisfied with the clarity and quality of the images? If you are not, then adjust your camera settings and try again.
What Do You Need For Star Photography?
Let’s look at some of the most necessary things for night stars photography.
A Perfect camera
A camera is the most crucial thing in shooting night images. While you can take shots of the sky and stars with mirrorless and DSLR cameras out there on the fields, it’s recommended for a beginner to shoot with a mid-to-professional range, full-frame camera with key specifications like good low light performance. For example, the Sony A7SII has an internal sensor-shift stabilization which allows you to take pictures at very low shutter speeds, and you can be bold that your images are not shaky. Other good cameras that you can use are NIKON D810 and Canon 6DMKII. These cameras can produce better low-light and night photographs. With these gadgets, you can shoot quality high-end sky and stars images from different angles and directions while maintaining your posture.
Wide-Angle lenses
Wide-angle lenses allow you to capture more detail in the sky. However, the lens you use must have a wide, flat aperture, not more than F/2.8.
A tripod
Another thing you need is a tripod with many leg extension points and an adjustable ball head that can provide support and stability. It allows you to shoot night images from any given angle or direction.
Long-lasting batteries
You should note that night photography drains your camera’s batteries faster. So, pack several if you intend to be shooting for a long.
Best Manual Mode Setting For A Camera To Click Star Photography?
There are numerous shooting settings depending on your style and preference.
For beginners, I recommend that you begin with the following camera setup:
Set a fast aperture of F/1.2 to F/5.6
* Set the exposure length to be between 15-25 seconds
* Set your white balance to auto or daylight. Auto white balance gives a better middle ground which you can adjust in the post-processing program. However, you can use the daylight white balance if you’re more interested in capturing the stars in their original colors.
* Set your ISO between 800-3,200 ( You can make it higher if you know your camera can support it without too much noise)
* Where to focus- Set your focus on something bright in the distance.
* Suitable lenses- wide-angle lens.
These settings are very significant if you want to get amazing shots. The most important aspect of these settings is exposure. Any exposure longer than 30 seconds will start to reveal star trails.
